From Risk to Resilience: Lessons from the Full Potential Workshops
In a climate where young people face a complex mix of pressures—social media influence, peer expectations, and real risks like criminal exploitation—equipping them with the tools to navigate life’s challenges has never been more urgent.
That’s why Our Pain 2 Power CIC and Forward Ever Inclusive Education CIC came together to deliver the Full Potential Workshops, a six-month programme in a London school aimed at empowering twelve young males to build resilience, make positive choices, and see their own value.
Over fourteen sessions, we tackled subjects many adults find difficult to address—youth violence, grooming, exploitation, identity, and conflict resolution—while also celebrating strengths, exploring employability, and strengthening relationships with authority figures. Sessions were far from lectures; they were dynamic spaces for debate, reflection, and honest conversation.
“I liked learning about conflict resolution as it taught me how to resolve things without arguing and violence.” – Participant
“The County Lines session taught me that not everyone is who they say they are.” – Participant
The presence of community police officers was transformative. It broke down barriers, challenged preconceptions, and fostered respect on both sides. One officer told us:
“As a Police Officer, it has given me an opportunity to form better relationships with young people.”
We measured progress not just in attendance but in shifts in mindset. Our temperature checks showed that 90% of the time, participants’ moods improved after each session. Two young men, in particular, made exceptional strides in their attitude, engagement, and behaviour.
Partners also recognised the value:
“These sessions are important for young people because not all conversations are easy for parents to have with their children.”
What we learned is clear—when young people are given the space, respect, and support to explore their world openly, they rise to the challenge. They not only learn about the dangers they face but also develop the confidence to steer clear of them.
The Full Potential Workshops proved that collaboration between education, community organisations, and police can create real change. It’s a model that works—and one we believe should be scaled so more young people across London can realise their full potential.
